DICON

Product Overview

DICON is an ABB product, designed for the protection and control of diesel engines. lt replaces the previous ABB products "DSB" and "ESB" and offers greater functionality through microprocessor application. Because of its modular structure, DICON provides independent control of diesel engines. Standard communication interfaces provide communication between a number of DICON units (max. 20), via the control bus RS 422. Communication errors have no influence on the safety functions. DICON is operated via an integrated keyboard. "START" and "STOP" commands, error messages, or changes in the operation mode are also displayed on the DICON LCD display. Initialization is performed via the integrated keyboard. No separate programming device is required. Various programs and parameters can be input with the help of a menu. Simple interconnections to ABB's generator protection unit, SYNPOL®, or suitable power converters allow the actual power signal to be fed into the unit. Together with a SYNPOL® unit, DICON can be extended to a complete automatic power management system with active load sharing and load-depending operation of the diesel engines. Galvanic separation of the battery voltage supply from other I/O's offers additional safety. These features make DICON the first choice for auxiliary diesel engines in marine and other applications.

Mechanical Design

DICON consits of a 111 x 348 mm terminal board plus a 144 x 144 mm operating unit for front panel mounting on a switchboard. Each DICON unit includes a four-line display and an operating keyboard.

Important Functions of DICON:

- Wide range of supply voltage (12-38 V DC).

- Safety against loss of power supply -- no shutdown in case of loss and return of the supply voltage.

- CMOS-technology ensures low current consumption.

- Start/Stop and Preglow outputs rated for 24 V/40 A.

- Galvanic separation of I/O's by optoisolators.

- Galvanic separation of 24 V supply to the engine.

- Terminal board for external connections can be plugged into DICON.

- External connections on a separate termination board.

- Individual programming for different types of diesel engines.

- Actual speed measuring either by tachogenerator or by pick-ups.

- Alarm system with 11 alarms, including three internally processed alarms.

- Eight programmable alarm inputs permitting free determination of logic, delay and alarm text display.

- Wire-break monitoring of Start/Stop solenoids.

- Permanent storage of important trip functions.

- Serial interface between several DICON units.

- RS 422 interface for connection with other systems.

- Easy connection of an additional remote operating panel.
